Rounds 1 & 2     *    Road Atlanta    *    March 10 – 12

Race #1

On a brisk Saturday morning in Georgia, with temperatures in the low 50’s and overcast threatening skies,  Alex Mayer took pole position for the inaugural North American Formula 1000 Championship in his Technotecs / Wilwood Brakes – JDR with a time of 1:24.1.

When the green flag flew, sprinkles of rain began to fall over the competitors. The first few laps saw multiple double yellow flags as the conditions caught several drivers off guard.  Polesitter Alex Mayer developed mechanical troubles early, ending his chances of victory. Jose Gerardo in the G-Labels Galmer took over from Mayer only to have battery issues slow him and ruin his chances for claiming the top spot. When the checkered flag flew, Area 81 Racing driver, #18 Tim Pierce in the Waterfall Security Solutions – Firman, suddenly found himself first amongst his Championship competitors going on to claim victory in the inaugural race for the North American Formula 1000 Championship presented by American Racer Tire.
