Alex Mayer and Jeremy Hill earn victories during opening weekend at Road Atlanta

The North American Formula 1000 Championship kicked off the 2019 season at the iconic Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta through a wet and water logged weekend.

Due to Easter weekend, the 3-day event was pushed up one day and free practice was held on Thursday for the only time in 2019.   All day Thursday seemed like opening weekend would be beautiful, however everyone was watching weather reports and preparing for Friday.

With rivers running across the track in the esses and turn 10, all on-track sessions were cancelled for Friday – except a single practice run in flooded conditions – which only 3 drivers attempted to make laps.

With qualifying washed out, the grid was set by Thursday practice times, putting the defending champion – #77 Alex Mayer up front to take the inaugural MPT Pole Position of 2019.

Race Day Saturday was a mix of changing conditions with the rain coming and going all day, forcing drivers to continually change their decision on whether to head out on slicks or rains.

When the field rolled off for Round 1 – the pole sitter, Alex Mayer, was no where to be seen – having missed the 1 minute and being forced to start at the rear of the field.   Lap after lap Alex drove through the field – setting up what looked to be a two-lap shootout with then leader, #00 Jeremy Hill.    However just as Alex was getting within a few car lengths – Jeremy developed a slight mechanical issue and was forced to retire from round 1, leaving the top step unchallenged to Alex Mayer.  Alex would also take home the inaugural Scott Young Enterprises Fastest Lap award – beating Jeremy by .086 !!  Now that is close racing!!!

Closely behind Alex was the #93 of Steve Hamilton and the #81 of Tim Pierce who also took home the Sunoco Race Fuels Hard Charger Award.

Race #2 for the weekend would start a bit different as polesitter Alex Mayer would actually make the grid, and take the green from the front.   However immediately it would be Jeremy Hill jumping out to the lead.   Lap after lap the #00 and the #77 battled wheel to wheel, with both drivers getting loose in the final corner after dropping a rear wheel on the outside curb of turn 12.   Jeremy would bobble and recover – to earn his first North American Formula 1000 Championship win, and the Scott Young Enterprises Fastest Lap award, while Alex would do a complete 360 through the grass and cross the line in second place.

Coming home in third, in his first NorthAmF1000 event – Michael Crowe in the #88 Citation would round out the podium for Round 2 and take home the Sunoco Hard Charger award.
